Can Employers Motivate Employees in 2012? - 29 Jan 2016 18:47

[
]December's employment numbers blew analysts expectations out of the water. Perhaps the news rustled the moat around the corporate kingdom's C-Suite. (Ok, maybe just a ripple) We're certainly not out of the waters of a struggling economy. But with unemployment falling for the fourth month in a row, talent retention concerns might make more of an appearance.

Most employees are glad to have a job these days. There's this unwritten mandate that has reigned since the recession; corporate is king, companies are doing more with less and underlings just have to deal with it and eat porridge. But if the C-Suite ignores improving economic data, might they be dethroned in a workers rebellion?

"I think 2012 is the year of the payback, meaning that all the slashing and burning of the workforce has severely wounded the ability to motivate employees," says Irwin Kellner, Chief Economist for Marketwatch.com.

While corporate profits are doing well, Kellner says the numbers can't grow at the same rate if companies let go or use fewer workers. He warns there will be consequences, such as lower productivity, less engagement and talent fleeing to competition, if management doesn't launch incentives to retain skilled workers and take the 24/7 stress down a notch.

"Workers are afraid but it doesn't mean they are going to work their tails off to come up with the next I-phone," adds Kellner.

The Numbers

If current economic data is a harbinger of things to come, perhaps corporate America might be a bit more concerned about retention, instead of burning workers to a crisp. Let's break down the numbers:

- Unemployment fell for a fourth time in a row to 8.5%, it's lowest point in nearly three years.

- There's been an uptick in the number of Americans quitting their jobs since the recession began in December of 2007, according to the Labor Department.

- The BNA Annual Economic Forecast, (BNA tracks and analyzes legal, regulatory and business information) shows the U.S. economy improving, albeit with limited job creation, expected to increase in the second half. Also, modest gains in private sector workers' hourly compensation.

- The rate of layoffs is lower than anytime before the recession.

The Uncertain Economy

While conditions remain tenuous due to the European debt crisis, the mortgage meltdown, wages not keeping up with inflation and the unknowns of numerous political footballs, including the payroll tax cut debate it is an election year. A factor that Kellner says is cyclically positive in nature. Election years are generally good for the economy. Both camps tend to play better together in Washington.

While there's a cautious air of optimism, more than 13 million people are still unemployed and more than half of them have been out of work for more than six months. Kellner says uncertainty across the board can sway the economy health and safety companies either way in 2012 as he writes in his Marketwatch.com column, New year's surprise for the economy? But the slight uptick in the "quit" rate is very much on Kellner's radar as he says it's an indication that employees are gaining more confidence that they can find a job elsewhere.

"The rising quit rate may be the first sign that the balance of power is changing in corporate America between the executives and the underlings," says Kellner who adds, "The grandiose plans that the corner office has in terms of creativity might have reached a limit."

Incentives to the Rescue?

Fringe benefits like work-life initiatives, retraining, education or wellness programs (like stress-reduction), are already on the radar of more progressive companies. But perhaps such incentives should be shouted from the corporate kingdom's bell tower in a call for better employee engagement and wellness in a stressed-out working culture.

"In the final analysis, it doesn't matter how much technology you have, if workers are exhausted and hanging on to their jobs by their fingernails," says Kellner.

Is all this economic news indeed a harbinger of things to come? Kellner says it's the job of the prognosticators to figure that out. But where there's smoke there just might be fire. The C-suite might do well to wake up and smell the coffee. If they don't, it might be the smell of their employees burning out instead.

Are the numbers a fluke or a harbinger of things to come? Will the C-Suite's interest be piqued?

Please check out my personal blog at WorkLifeNation.com and friend me up on Twitter: @JudyMartin8

Related Links:

The Most Stressful Jobs Of 2012

The Best Jobs for Women in 2012

Where the Jobs Will (and Won't) Be in 2012

The 10 Worst Pieces of 'Good' Career Advice

How to Get Paid to Do Nothing

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/employers-motivate-employees-2012/story?id=15381724[
] - Comments: 0

Health/wellness programs in large corporations- need company name, I heard that the government gives kickbacks? - 28 Jan 2016 01:48

[
]I work for a small organic farm around Phoenix Arizona, and we're looking for large corporations around here to:

1. Sell our produce to (their employee cafeterias) and

2. Set up a booth once a week in their employee cafeteria in order to promote our farm and our CSA program. (Community Supported Agriculture- we deliver bags of produce to members once a week to their workplace for employees who buy in to our program- cheap, easy, fresh produce from our farm)

I was told today that the government gives Large Corporations kickbacks in the form of compensation for employee healthcare and benefits- something to the effect of $1-$2 dollars towards every $3 the company spends on employee wellness. I am not sure how to begin looking for companies around here in the Phoenix Area. I am open to any tips or information. Currently we sell a lot of produce to Bon Appetit, the employee cafeteria at Intel for example, and we also have many of their employees as members of our CSA program.

I'd like a little guidance in how to begin researching this.

Thanks !

[

[
]The establishment and discovery of electronics as a different branch dates back in the year 1906. It was when Lee De Forest concocted a 'Triode', which was capable of amplifying electrical circuits without taking aid from any non-mechanical device. After this invention, electrical technology became distinct from electronics and was given a different identity. Since then, it is considered to be a bough of science and technology, where electrons in motion are controlled and used in various devices and in vacuum. Every electronic device functions by the mechanism of electron motion control done by semiconductors.

Semiconductors are used profusely in the preparation of varied electronic circuits for deciphering diverse practical problems in electronics. Workplace Safety Facts - 24 Jan 2016 18:20

[
]It is your workplace where you spend a major part of your day. It is like your second home. This makes it important for the employers to cater to the needs of their employees. The employees should feel safe and comfortable while working. Apart from work culture, company policies, and ergonomic considerations, workplace safety is also a determinant of employee happiness. After all, happy and satisfied employees make a productive workforce.

Facts

According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor, the year 1994 witnessed the maximum number of workplace fatalities and 2002 witnessed the least. This study took into account the period between 1992 and 2006.The Bureau of Labor Statistics has noted that people engaged in cutting timber, flying airplanes, working with metals, roofing and extractive occupations have to face fatal risks at work. Truck drivers and construction workers have to endanger their lives as a part of their occupation. According to the information from the year 2000, timber cutters met with 122.1 fatalities per 100,000 employees, which was the highest count, while truck drivers met with 27.6 fatalities per 100,000 employees. The fatalities observed in other professions ranged between these two values.Research reveals that work accidents cost billions per year for companies. The number of deaths and injured at work is quite high.Very little is known about the workplace safety of Americans before the late nineteenth century. American railroads of the nineteenth century and mining activities proved dangerous for the workers. With the passage of time, employers began to realize the need for their employees' safety. They came up with schemes that dealt with workplace safety.Ultimately, workplace safety is about considering the health and well-being of the people who work for you and those who work with you. The most important assets of an organization are its employees. Their safety and well-being is of utmost importance. We must always remember that human lives are priceless.

Importance

A safe situation is the one where the risk of injuries or damage to property is low. Safety is generally meant to impact the risk of death or injury during work. Different employees do different types of work in an organization. Some types of work may involve high risks. There are some professions that are known to be hazardous. Organizations need to ensure the safety of their workers by dealing with all the safety issues raised by the machinery and/or equipment involved.

Workplace safety is a responsibility of the management. It includes the formation and execution of safety programs and policies. Insurance is often seen as something that can restitute the loss caused to the employee while working. The company can issue policies for the employees to help them feel financially secure.

Workers in the engineering and chemical industries need to be protected from the dangers that their professions carry. Those working with fire or electricity are always faced with serious threats to their life and property. Those serving in defense services are at a constant risk of losing their life. Even the war journalists have to often confront dangerous situations.

To safeguard people involved in such risk-bearing professions, their organizations should employ safety procedures and practices and provide the employees with proper training of dealing with accidents at work. A measurement of risk and risk management through proper safety inspections is vital for the safe functioning of an organization.

[

SoCal nuclear plant's safety questioned - 24 Jan 2016 17:55

[
]

The explosions at the Fukushima nuclear complex in Japan terrified people as far away as San Clemente, Calif., home to the San Onofre nuclear plant.

"Japan is an exact, perfect example of what can happen. We are less than two miles away, and we're scared." said resident Dagmar Foy.

The crisis unfolding in Japan has put a spotlight on nuclear safety in the United States. Yet at a Senate hearing Tuesday, a top federal regulator said it will have no effect on the re-licensing of the 104 nuclear plants in the United States.

CBS News correspondent Terry McCarthy reports the San Onofre plant has a history of problems that, some whistleblowers claim, were ignored for years.

The 28-year-old plant is just five miles from an earthquake fault. Like Fukushima, it has a long history of management problems and safety violations including faulty diesel generators, falsified fire watch reports, and inoperable emergency batteries.

"The thing that was occurring was that there was very little oversight," says Mike Mason, who worked at San Onofre for 30 years along with Rick Busnardo, who was there for 25. They were in charge of making canisters to store spent nuclear fuel - one of the biggest worries right now at the Japan plant. In 2008, they say they discovered an employee was welding the canisters incorrectly.

"Potentially there could have failed to contain the fuel rod like it was supposed to," Mason said. "He knew he was doing wrong and we immediately identified that to our senior management. They weren't really receptive to it."

Mason and Busnardo were so concerned they took their issue to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They weren't alone. By 2009, complaints related to safety from San Onofre workers hit nearly 10 times the industry average.

James Chambers, a 27-year veteran of San Onofre, helped ensure the plant was operating within its safety guidelines. He says management pressured him to stop making complaints.

"If the workers at the power plant are afraid to tell the truth, that jeopardizes the health and safety of the public," Chambers said.

Things got so bad at San Onofre that in March of last year federal regulators sent an official letter to the plant expressing their concern that workers had the perception they were not free to raise safety issues without fear of retaliation.

Mason and Busnardo retired claiming unfair retaliation. The missing link in employee wellness programs - 24 Jan 2016 15:47

Tags:

[
]According to the Chicago Tribune (10/26/10), a study conducted by the Midwest Business Group on Health that includes some of the nations largest businesses (i.e. Boeing, Kraft Foods, and Abbot Labs) indicates that 88% of workers lack an understanding of the value of preventative services and 56% say that they have no motivation to stay healthy. In other words, the missing link in most employee wellness programs is MOTIVATION!

They can encourage, cajole, educate and inform employees until theyre blue in the face. But if an employer fails to systematically ignite, inspire, and motivate its employees to act preventatively and to take personal responsibility for their own health, all the new facilities in the world wont amount to a hill of beans. In fact theyre a waste of time, effort, and resources.

Motivation, Motivation, and Motivation

Wellness, dare I say fitness, has always been and will always be all about three things including, MOTIVATION, MOTIVATION, and MOTIVATION. If you know how to motivate your people, you win. If you dont know how to motivate your people, you lose. In a nutshell, thats the entire story when it comes to employee wellness and all the issues that revolve around it including the cost of health care premiums.

Lets Say For Example

So lets talk about motivation. Lets say that Kraft Foods has an employee who needs to lose some weight and they help her find a diet which results in her losing a pound a day. How high do you think her motivational level will be? Can you say sky high? On the other hand lets say theres an investor whose investments generate daily progress, i.e. daily black ink. How motivated will that investor be to continue investing? Real motivated, right?

However, What if

Now, lets say that the dieters weight loss pattern goes down to a pound a week, and your investors black ink deteriorates to one piece of good news per week, what happens to their motivation to keep on keeping on? Worse yet, what if the dieter drops down to a pound a month and the investor to one piece of good news per month?

The moral is that motivation depends heavily on frequent success, frequent payoffs, frequent winning. And the higher the frequency, the higher the motivation will be. And the higher the motivation, the more entrenched/established the related habits become.

If They Only Knew

In other words, if Boeing, Kraft Foods, and Abbot Labs only knew how to set the stage in such a way that frequent success, frequent payoffs, and frequent winning were automatically built into their employee wellness programs, they wouldnt be so baffled over how to inspire and motivate employees to act preventatively and to take personal responsibility for their own health.

In the meantime, 88% of workers lack an understanding of the value of preventative services, and 56% say that they have no motivation to stay healthy. In the meantime precious time, effort, and resources continue to be wasted.

[
